Hemp Field Trials

In 2022, Wessex Community Assets received a grant from the Dorset AONB Farming In Protected Landscapes Fund (FiPL), which, together with important match funding from Friends Provident Foundation, helped us to work with a group of West Dorset Farmers to explore the logistics of Hemp as a break crop and undertake field trials in growing, harvesting and processing Hemp.

Hemp returned to West Dorset for the first time in over 100 years. Despite challenges of weather and machinery, more than 40 tonnes of hemp were harvested in the first 2 years, and the growing of hemp has extended into several more farms in the Bridport area.

Hemp is a multi-functional product with positive environmental benefits, including soil improvement and carbon sequestration. Hemp is a versatile, fast-growing plant which can be grown organically whilst restoring the soil. This plant has the potential to solve many of our current land use issues and revolutionise farming and industry to support local economic development.

Hemp has a long historical association with the Bridport area and could be a very valuable low carbon tool for local farmers during the transition to a zero carbon economy. The UK is currently behind the curve internationally and there is a distinct lack of data in the West Dorset/UK context.

In total 10 Ha of Hemp was grown in the summer of 2022. In addition to being able to share the learnings from the field trials through reports and consequent material applications, we sponsored a short film produced by Chasing Cow Productions.

WCA established a farmer led Hemp Group in July 2021 with a view to supporting Hemp as a break crop in a regenerative agricultural system. As Hemp is a new and innovative crop for local farmers there was a clear need to build confidence in Hemp as an alternative crop in their future farm business plans.

The learning from the field trials would be shared with other farmers in Dorset as well as nationally to help support a transition to a regenerative agricultural system and act as a driver for more sustainable local economies.

Despite unpredictable weather conditions, farmers produced a healthy volume of Hemp, learnt a great deal about growing and harvesting the crop and began to get a better understanding of the markets for Hemp products.
